Surface Film Part Deux

The Greenbacks of Trout Unlimited are excited to announce the 2nd Surface Film event showcasing top professional fly-fishing photography across the country at the Anthology Fine Art gallery (635 Santa Fe Drive Denver, CO 80204) on Thursday February 2nd, 2012. Similar to last year’s event, framed prints will be available through a silent auction to benefit Trout Unlimited.

This will be an exclusive preview event, and the gallery will be open to the public February 3rd and through the month of February.

New this year, the show attendees will vote for ‘best-in-show’ honors. The winning photographer will receive the National Trout Unlimited Professional Photo of the Year, a cash prize, and will be prominently featured in a future issue of Trout Magazine. In addition, a second place finisher will also receive a cash prize.

Please join us on February 2nd, 2012 from 7pm to 11pm to enjoy our industry’s best photography work, as well as live music and drinks. All ages welcome.

Bristol Bay Road Show – Denver This Week!

Hey Colorado! If you weren’t aware, the Bristol Bay Road Show stops through Denver this Thursday at the Oriental Theater. Don’t miss this FREE show to benefit Trout Unlimited Alaska and learn how one of the largest gold and copper mines could affect millions of spawning salmon runs. While there will be free admission and free wild Alaskan salmon appetizers, there is also a bunch of raffle items available including a Scott S4 rod!

And that’s not all. Come see one of the best documentaries ever made by Felt Soul Media – Red Gold. For those of you that have seen it, it’s even better on a big screen (trust me). There will also be a panel from people directly involved in the fight to protect the people who have voted this project down – even though large mining companies continue to seek approval from government agencies to proceed – even after they said they would listen to the people.

Come out and show your support, learn about the proposed Pebble Mine, or to just enjoy a good time with friends.

Sponsored by ExOfficio, the Alaska Program of Trout Unlimited and the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska, the contest, with an approximate retail value of $11,000, includes:

Three nights’ lodging and board for two at the Sportsman’s Alaska Bear Trail Lodge
• Customized, guided fishing trips and nature excursions, including floatplane transportation
• Airline vouchers for two roundtrips from Seattle to Anchorage

The promotion is aimed at raising awareness for Bristol Bay, home of the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery, which is threatened by a proposed large-scale gold and copper mine. More than 12,000 people earn their living from Bristol Bay fisheries and related tourism industries, which generate $450 million a year. The Save Bristol Bay effort is led by a broad coalition, including non-profit Trout Unlimited, Alaska Native organizations, commercial fisherman, and outdoor enthusiasts. • Epicenter of a $450 million a year fishing industry and 12,000 fishing and tourism jobs

Pebble Mine would:
• Dig an open-pit mine up to two miles wide and 1,700 feet deep; and an underground mine of similar scale
• Dump up to 10 billion tons of toxic mine waste in perpetuity in the heart of the Bristol Bay watershed
• Be operated by and profit two foreign companies
• Potentially destroy the salmon runs, other fish, habitat, and wildlife of this productive and wild area

The folks over at Take Kids Fly Fishing are launching a new contest to help encourage kids to fish. With an awesome gear line up, this looks to be a great month full of entries. If you entered my contest last month, please look at this for another opportunity to win some prizes.
