At about the age of six, my father put a good ole’ fashioned spinner in my hand. Close to the same time, we were just weaving fat earthworms on size 2 hooks (and landing big trout). My close friend Ryan and I would take a canoe out on small lakes near our cabin in Southwest Colorado and come home with string-loads of fresh rainbows.
A few years later, my father gave me a mayfly. Ryan and I would just practice casting on a pond and catch nothing. Then, during a family outing on what turned out to be a rainy, gray day, we hiked along the Piedra river. We took our fly rods and began casting just as we did in the ponds. Something happened, and even with the movement of the river, we could float small adult caddis flies on top and land trout all day.
While most of my childhood was filled with the humbleness of Oklahoma, I never forgot what I learned in one day on a river. Visits to Colorado over winter and summer breaks became increasingly frequent. While a lot of time was spent skiing, fly-fishing remained a staple.
I finally moved to Colorado where fly-fishing and work have become my life. I married a beautiful woman from South Dakota, and we live with our three dogs near downtown Denver. The rivers aren’t far away, and there are a lot of them – some small, some big. I’m often found on the South Platte or the Blue, so say hello when you see the ‘no pebble’ hat wading by.

Why “Compleat”?
Izaak Walton (9 August 1593 – 15 December 1683) was an English writer, author of The Compleat Angler.
The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653, but Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century. It was dedicated to John Offley, his most honoured friend. There was a second edition in 1655, a third in 1661 (identical with that of 1664), a fourth in 1668 and a fifth in 1676. In this last edition the thirteen chapters of the original have grown to twenty-one, and a second part was added by his loving friend and brother angler Charles Cotton, who took up Venator where Walton had left him and completed his instruction in fly fishing and the making of flies.
