I was finally able to test out the Monomaster from Grasshopper Outdoors this past weekend when a three fly nymph rig got all tangled and I didn’t want to shove the entire brand new leader in my pack (as I usually do).
Ian White was nice enough to send me one of these a while back to test out. While most of us don’t just throw our lines on the bank, or in the stream, I had a bad habit of just stuffing them in my pack or in a pocket. This created quite the mess when trying to dig other things out of those compartments. A lot of other companies make great little trash products for you to carry along, but leaders and tippets just get in the way.
The Monomaster worked perfectly! With an almost brand new 9ft 5x leader and 6x tippet on the fly rig, I had quite the mess.

So, I pulled out the new Monomaster and simply fed a piece of the line into the the feed and wound the turning knob. This thing pulled it right in without any issues.

I still enjoy having other compartments for trash, but this thing is perfect for tangled or no longer needed tippet or leaders. And, and a retail price of about $15, you can’t beat it. I will continue to recommend this product for a long time, as I haven’t found anything else like it.

Also, to note, I went ahead and went through the cleaning process of the Monomaster. Just pop open the bottom and it’s easier to get all the line out and throw in the trash than getting all your dog hair out of a wire comb.
So, give one a shot! And, if you do and see other anglers’ lines on the side of a stream, please pick it up and dispose of it. This thing can hold a lot of line.
