Killing it on the South Platte

Nothing like taking off on a Monday to fish the South Platte near Deckers, CO. My wife and dog tagged along, and our plan was to go hike into the canyon. However, once we saw the parking lot at Gill Trail, we quickly changed our minds. A quick stop at Flies and Lies and we simply hit the water there near the shop. It was on quick with bows and browns hitting midges and caddis on top. Though I didn’t land a fish on top with PMDs or caddis all day, they certainly got some attention. The main attraction were small midge nymphs including a zebra and JuJube. All fish landed were in the 18″ – 20″ range, so they certainly were not the biggest fish I’ve caught in that water, but damn were those fish fat!

While Ann and Lo hiked around a bit, I finally caught a fish in front of them. And while my handling and photography skills need work, I again got another picture of one of these bows that sincerely have PHDs in how ‘not to get caught”.

Now, you all can comment and vote on what fly this is, but I caught several on this one alone – thoughts?

My neighbor ties a pattern like that, and he calls it a Gallatin Blue Stone. They kill it on the Gallatin too.
